Managed Payroll Helps with Retail Award Penalty Rate Change

Fair Work recently announced changes to penalty rates for shiftworkers and casual employees under the Retail Award. The changes will come into effect from the first full pay period after the 1 November 2018. For more information on the penalty rate change see below.    

The changes are as follows: 

Shiftworkers 

Full-time and part-time employees who are shiftworkers get paid the following percentages of their base pay rate

Effective period Penalty rate
ppc 1 November 2018 to 30 June 2019    195%
1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020    185%
1 July 2020 onwards    175%

Casual employees 

Casual employees who are shift workers get paid the following percentages of their base pay rate. These rates include their casual loading. 

Effective period  Penalty rate 
ppc 1 November 2018 to 30 June 2019  220% 
1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020  215% 
1 July 2020 onwards  200% 

 

Saturday work 

Casual employees 

Casual employees who aren’t shift workers and work ordinary hours on a Saturday get paid the following percentages. These rates include their casual loading. 

Effective period  Penalty rate 
ppc 1 November 2018 to 30 September 2019  140% 
1 October 2019 to 29 February 2020  145% 
1 March 2020 onwards  150% 

 

Monday to Friday evening work after 6pm 

Casual employees 

Casual employees who aren’t shiftworkers get paid the following percentages. These rates include their casual loading.

Effective period Penalty rate
ppc 1 November 2018 to 30 September 2019   130%
1 October 2019 to 29 February 2020   135%
1 March 2020 to 30 September 2020   140%
1 October 2020 to 28 February 2021   145%
1 March 2021 onwards   150%
